Maternity outfits are certainly a lot harder to style than I ever anticipated. Styling the bump is a challenge and I would spend hours trying on everything in my wardrobe in different ways, seeing what would stick. This turned out to be quite eye-opening and helpful, and would be my first tip to you for styling your maternity outfits.
Tip 1: find what works in your wardrobe first before buying anything new
Also, when I first became pregnant, I think I was in denial about having to buy new items to fit my wardrobe (as a slow fashion enthusiast, this was something I really didn’t want to do!) I didn’t want to buy things that were just going to be worn for such a short period of time. I did eventually come around to this, as I realised it was inevitable that I needed ‘new’ items so I wasn’t walking around naked all day.
So what I decided to do was to buy second-hand first. This curbed my anxiety for buying new items and made me feel a little less guilty. It also really helped with my bank account.
Tip 2: source items second-hand
Of course, if you’re buying things second-hand online, you can’t try anything on. So yes, this makes it difficult. But I weighed up my options and took the plunge. I think there was only one thing online that I bought that didn’t fit. And I simply re-sold that item, so it wasn’t a big deal.
I looked for items that were 1-3 sizes bigger than I usually wear, items with stretchy waistbands, and items made of stretchy materials. I also searched for maternity items. I managed to source and style three wedding guest outfits, all from Depop while I was pregnant. All of these dresses I have re-listed to sell again on the platform.
Tip 3: learn how to re-sell items on Depop, Poshmark, Facebook Marketplace, etc.
Tip 4: borrow from your partner (if they are bigger than you)
The other thing I did was borrowed from my partners wardrobe. I have worn a few of Alex’s jumpers and shirts in times of need and they have worked perfectly fine for my maternity outfits.
