It doesn’t have to take hours of painstaking research to improve your style. You can make small changes to the way you style your outfits, which will make a big overall difference.
I’ve listed five easy things you can start doing today, to help improve your style so that you feel more elevated and confident with your everyday outfits.
Easy ways to improve your style
1. Add or mix textures
Often for me, an eye-catching outfit is one that has a mix of textures. Textures can be found in the material of the fabric, or even the pattern of the fabric. A monochrome outfit of all black, will look a lot better if there are a mix of fabrics involved.
I would say, when it comes to mixing patterns, try not to mix more than 2 different patterns. Here are two examples of textures being mixed in a beautiful way.
2. Think small
Improving your style is as simple as thinking about the small things. The buttons on a shirt, the length of trousers, or rolled-up sweater sleeves. It’s the tiny, final details that can make an outfit shine. Top fashion stylists are always focused on the small details.
For example, the buttons on a shirt can affect the overall look of the shirt. They could make the shirt look cheap. So when purchasing something new, ask yourself if you really like every part of that item. If something stands out as not quite working (and it can’t be altered), then that’s not the right item to buy. It took me 2 years to find my perfect wide-leg trouser, and I’m so glad I waited.
Another example is the styling of sleeves and cuffs. Rolling up jumper sleeves so that 1/3 of your arm is showing, is a nice way to create balance in an outfit. The difference between a good outfit, and a great outfit, could simply be in the way your jeans are cuffed.
I encourage you to experiment with small tweaks in your outfit to help improve your style. You’ll soon come to learn what you like and dislike.
3. Try thrifting unique pieces
When I look at some of the best outfits at fashion week, worn by stylists and guests, I always notice something unique or eclectic about their outfits.
I have a couple of thrifted pieces in my wardrobe that really stick out to me as being unique pieces. When I wear these pieces I feel a real confidence inside me, like I’m dressing for my authentic self, and I also know not every person walking the streets will be wearing these items.
I think mixing these unique pieces into your everyday outfits can help elevate your style, and develop your personal style as well.
4. Have your go-to jewellery
If you haven’t done so already, now is the time to set up your go-to everyday jewellery collection. A collection of pieces that can be mixed and matched and worn with anything you own.
Something to consider when putting this together is what colour hardware you prefer to wear (or maybe you don’t mind mixing your hardwares). Finding versatile pieces is key. Necklaces that you can layer together, or change the length of the chain, rings that you can stack, and earrings that go with multiple looks (I love a small hoop, or a pearl drop earring). I have some helpful jewellery styling tips here if you need more guidance on this subject.
Another benefit of having a go-to jewellery collection is that you will begin to develop a signature look. There’s nothing wrong with repetitiveness, having a signature look is a great way to improve your overall style.
5. Take a chance
Years ago, when sneakers became acceptable to wear with almost anything, I really wasn’t on board with the idea. I just didn’t really get it at first. But, I decided to take a chance on the look, by creating an outfit with a skirt and sneakers. The next thing I knew, I was hooked. I felt amazing (and my feet felt amazing) when I finished an outfit with sneakers.
You never know what you may or may not like until you really test something out. I would recommend testing different looks out in a store, or borrowing from a friend, before financially investing in something.
With that being said, you also don’t need to love every new trend that comes out. Just because something is trendy, doesn’t mean YOU have to wear it. Really thinking about what you like and dislike rather than following trends, is another great way to improve your style.
