Juxtaposition in outfits! It’s the one thing I keep returning to when I am styling an outfit and I want to create more interest in the overall look.
Juxtaposition is the pairing of contrasting elements to create visual interest or intrigue.
So think, pairing things that aren’t traditionally paired together.
So in today’s post, I’m going to give you 4 outfit formula examples that all have some sort of juxtaposition involved.
And my hope is that this gives you some inspiration to think differently about how you can style the items in your wardrobe that you already own.
Outfit One: High & Low Juxtaposition
This outfit involves the juxtaposition of casual and dressy (ie: high & low).
Denim jeans are casual in nature, these ones are also more casual being a very light wash with some distressing at the pockets. They’re also relaxed and loose which gives a casual element as well.
On the opposing side, the black top I am wearing is quite dressy. It’s a mesh fabric, with a satin detail on the sleeves. I have then added small strappy heels and gold jewellery which also dress up the look.
Outfit Two: Whimsical & Edgy Juxtaposition
Whimsical/boho/feminine combined with edgy creates a great juxtaposition, if this suits your personal style.
I’ve gone for a boho dress, with an edgy moto jacket, and dark ankle boots.
Outfit Three: Feminime & Masculine Juxtaposition
One of the more well-known juxtapositions commonly worn these days is feminine paired with masculine.
In my outfit the satin slip dress juxtaposes the masculine shape of the oversized tailored blazer.
Another bonus juxtaposing element in this outfit is the white tennis sneakers. Pairing casual sneakers with a satin dress or tailored outfits is also a modern way to style outfits and create intrigue.
Outfit Four: Sporty & Chic Juxtaposition
Dressed-up sportswear and leisure wear is another way to create juxtaposition in an outfit. I’ve paired bike shorts with sporty trainers and socks, and rather than adding a hoodie or sweater, I’ve chosen an oversized blazer which is the less obvious choice.
I’ve also kept on my large gold hoop earrings, as well as my chunky bracelet which would not traditionally be worn with sportswear.
Creating juxtaposition in outfits doesn’t have to be complicated. You might be doing it already!

If you’re unsure whether your outfit formula is working, type it into Pinterest and see if any similar outfits come up. If there are no similar outfits, it may be a sign that you need to go back to the drawing board.
